How can I help my child who stutters at home?

There are many things that you can do at home to help your child achieve more fluency. First off, it is important to create an environment that is less stressful for your child. For example, if you know your child stutters a lot during dinner because everyone is talking fast and interrupting one another, it may be a good idea to create talking rules at the table. This will create a situation where there is less pressure for your child to get their message across as fast as possible. Also, try to set aside time for relaxed conversation and interaction with just you and your child.

Secondly, it is important to alter your own talking behaviours and model them for your child. When you speak try to talk in a slow, relaxed tone. When your child is talking, keep eye contact and wait for him/her to finish. Do not interrupt, correct or ask them to start over, as this may create a more stressful talking situation for your child. Let them know that you realize that sometimes it is hard for them to get their words out, but you understand what they are saying and to take their time.

Finally, don’t forget to encourage your child and reassure them when they get frustrated. Like you, they also want to know that everything will be okay.
